If you’ve been in the market for Microsoft 365 security platforms for your MSP, you’ve probably come across comparison articles, Reddit/TechTribe discussions, Youtube reviews, and “Why we’re better than…” pages. While these can be helpful, they can also paint an incomplete picture.

The reality is that the Microsoft 365 security landscape has evolved rapidly over the past few years, just like Octiga.

Many of the perceptions we still hear today were accurate at one point in time. Others were based on early versions of the platform, or comparisons that haven’t been updated to reflect today’s capabilities and features. This is totally understandable. Software evolves quickly, and not every review or comparison keeps pace.

To be clear, many of these perceptions were reasonable at the time they were formed. The issue isn't that people intentionally got it wrong; it's that Octiga has continued to evolve while many comparison articles and discussions have not.

Now we’ll clear up some of the most common misconceptions we have heard or read online about Octiga today.

Myth #1: "Octiga is just a Secure Score tool."

This is probably the most common misconception; and one that’s easy to understand! Years ago, many MSPs first encountered Octiga when it was a way to improve Microsoft Secure Score and deploy best practice baselines across their customer base. As a result, some people still think of Octiga as primarily being a Secure Score dashboard.

The truth is that Secure Score is just one piece of the puzzle; and one with flaws, at that.

Secure Score tells you how “healthy” your environment is at any given moment. However, it does not continuously enforce policies, remediate changes in configuration, or operationalize and streamline your security strategy. Additionally, Secure Score doesn’t take exceptions into account. Do your clients have a printer that sends scanned documents over SMTP? If so, Secure Score would reduce your score as if SMTP was enabled for every user in your tenant.

Today’s version of Octiga helps MSPs…

  • Continuously monitor Microsoft 365 security posture and alerts
  • Detect changes in configuration
  • Automatically remediate issues
  • Standardize security across every tenant
  • Operationalize Microsoft Defender
  • Generate customer-ready reporting

Secure Score only measures your posture. Octiga helps you improve and maintain that posture continuously.

Myth #2: "Octiga only audits; it doesn’t actually fix anything."

This misconception ties in closely with the first. If people think Octiga is only measuring Secure Score, it’s easy to assume that the platform only reports problems and leaves the work to the technicians.

That may have reflected earlier perceptions, but it no longer reflects the platform today.

Modern MSPs simply don’t have time to manually review hundreds of settings in hundreds of tenants, looking for misconfigurations or potential security holes. Modern security platforms need to do more than identify issues; they need to help resolve them!

Octiga now supports automated remediation, continuous policy enforcement, configuration monitoring and remediation, helping MSPs like you spend less time reacting to issues and more time delivering value to customers.

Finding these problems is important but fixing them consistently is even better!

Myth #3: “Octiga is only for security baselines.”

This is another perception rooted in Octiga’s history. Security baselines remain one of the fastest ways to standardize Microsoft 365 tenants, and they’re still an essential part of the platform.

That being said, baselines are only the starting point. Once a baseline is deployed, the real work can begin. Users change settings, new devices are enrolled, and threats evolve.

Today’s Octiga continues to work long after the initial deployment. Octiga will monitor for changes, enforce the standards you have set, automatically resolve issues, and more. This helps MSPs like you maintain a consistent security posture across every tenant.

Think of baselines as one leg of the stool; nowhere near the complete picture!

Myth #4: “Microsoft Lighthouse already does everything Octiga does.”

Microsoft Lighthouse is an excellent tool. It provides native multi-tenant administration and helps MSPs manage customer environments more effectively than maintaining each environment individually.

However, administration and automation aren’t the same thing. Lighthouse gives administrators visibility and some management capabilities. Octiga, on the other hand, focuses on helping MSPs operationalize security through continuous monitoring, policy enforcement, reporting, remediation, and standardized workflows.

Many MSPs use Lighthouse alongside purpose-built security operations platforms because each solves different operational challenges. Native administration is valuable, but automation is what allows it to scale effectively.

Myth #5: “Open-source tools provide the same experience.”

Open-source platforms and tools have become increasingly popular in the MSP community, and for good reason! They offer tremendous flexibility and can accomplish a remarkable amount in the hands of experienced administrators.

The catch is that flexibility comes with responsibility. Someone will still need to put the time in to deploy the platform, maintain its infrastructure, install updates, troubleshoot issues, and overall ensure everything keeps running smoothly.

Commercial SaaS platforms, on the other hand, solve a different problem; they minimize operational overhead.

For many MSPs, the question isn’t “Which platform is cheaper?”. Instead, it’s more along the lines of “Which platform allows my technicians to spend more time serving customers rather than maintaining tools?”

Myth #6: “You need Microsoft Premium licensing for everything.”

Licensing conversations are frequently more confusing than they need to be. Some Microsoft security features absolutely require specific Microsoft licenses, like Conditional Access. This is determined by Microsoft, not by the management platform you chose.

However, not every capability within Octiga requires every tenant to upgrade to premium licensing, such as our location-based auto-blocking. In many cases, MSPs can still improve security posture, standardize configurations, and automate operational tasks without needing blanket licensing upgrades.

When evaluating any Microsoft security platform, it’s important to separate Microsoft licensing requirements from platform capabilities; they’re not always the same thing!

Myth #7: “Octiga is just another M365 management tool.”

At first glance, this seems reasonable. After all, Octiga helps MSPs manage M365 environments. But management is only one part of the story. Today’s platform is designed to help MSPs operationalize M365 by providing:

  • Continuous monitoring
  • Automated remediation
  • Policy enforcement
  • Defender operationalization
  • Customer reporting
  • User onboarding/offboarding
  • Tenant standardization
  • Security workflow automation

…that’s a much broader mission than simply changing settings in the Microsoft admin center!

Myth #8: “Monitoring security is enough.”

Security alerts are important; every MSP wants to know when something changes.

However, alerts alone don’t reduce risk. In fact, many MSPs are already overwhelmed by the sheer number of notifications they receive on a daily basis.

The goal isn’t to create more alerts, instead the goal is to create fewer unresolved issues. That means continuously monitoring environments, enforcing standards, remediating security holes, and ensuring every customer remains aligned with your security policies.

Monitoring is the beginning of the process, not the end!

Myth #9: “More integrations automatically make a better platform.”

It’s tempting to compare products by simply counting integrations. One platform supports dozens of SaaS applications. Another focuses primarily on M365.

Surely, the one with more integrations is a better choice, right? Not necessarily; breadth and depth are different!

If your MSP manages a wide variety of SaaS applications, broad visibility may be exactly what you need. But if M365 is the core of your customers’ environments (as it is for many MSPs), then deep automation, policy enforcement, Defender management, and operational workflows often provide more day-to-day value than simply supporting more applications.

The best platform isn’t the one with the longest integrations page; instead, it’s the one that best matches your business, workflows, and customers.

Myth #10: “Octiga hasn’t changed much.”

This may be the biggest misconception of all! Many comparison articles, videos, blog posts, and forum discussions still describe Octiga based on what it looked like two or three years ago. Software doesn’t stand still, neither do we!

Over the past several years, Octiga has expanded far beyond security baselines to include…

  • Automated remediation
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Microsoft Defender operationalization
  • Fully customizable security baselines
  • Block Country (automatically block sign-ins from unauthorized countries)
  • User onboarding and offboarding
  • Multi-tenant reporting
  • Broader security operations workflows

If the last time you evaluated Octiga was in 2023 or even early 2024, today’s platform will look very different from what you remember!

So, where did these myths come from?

Most of these misconceptions didn’t come from nowhere. Many originated from early product reviews, comparison pages, community discussions, or evaluations based on older versions of Octiga. At the time, many of these observations were correct!

Software evolves, though. Features are added, platforms mature, and customers need changes.

Unfortunately, blog posts, comparison charts, and forum discussions don’t always evolve at the same pace. That’s why outdated impressions can stick around long after the product has moved forward.

We don’t expect you to take our word for it. Instead, we encourage you to evaluate Octiga based on what it is today; not what it used to do several years ago. The best technology decisions are made using current information, not outdated assumptions.
